ELYMAIS & CHARACENE
    Elymais was the biblical Elam, located in southwestern Iran and southeastern Iraq.  The Elamites were evidently not related to the Sumerians, Semites, or Persians, and may have been aboriginal inhabitants.  Settlements are known from as early as 6000 BC.  Conquered repeatedly by outsiders, eventually incorporated into the Persian Empire, taken by Alexander the Great, subsequently inherited by the Parthians, who allowed it to develop into a feudal vassal state.  The coinage dates from that period.
    Characene, also in southern Iraq, was a Parthian feudatory that apparently obtained most of its revenue from port duties.

Note: these bronze drachms are not uncommon, though they are not ubiquitous like 4th century Roman bronzes.  Style is crude, workmanship usually mediocre, condition usually bad.  These are superior specimens.  Reference numbers are from De Morgan.
