BYZANTINE COINS
The eastern part of the Roman empire continued for almost 1000 years after the eclipse of the empire in the west.  We call them Byzantine after the old Greek name of Constantinople, currently Turkish Istanbul, but they thought they were Romans.  The descendants of the last imperial family are still around today, and consider their claim to the imperium to be still in effect.
