CHINA, coins of the Qing dynasty, 1644-1911 AD.
Dynastic political development seems always to follow a pattern described by the 13th century writer Ibn Khaldun in his Muqaddimah.  Basically, they (the dynasties) start out charismatic and populist and end up effete in walled compounds with other people doing their work for them.  New powers arise in the boondocks and blow the old one away.  This pattern repeats monotonously in human history, quite visible and conscious in the Chinese context, where the rebels, until this last batch, always claimed to be bringing back the good old days.  The non-Chinese Manchus, whose state began in the 16th century, claimed that their invasion of China in the 17th was in support of the "legitimate" Ming claimant, they were just the muscle needed to restore law and order.  Things changed when they got their hands on the levers of power.
By the way, Chinese "q" is pronounced "ch," thus "Qing" = "Ching."

The Manchu overlord Nurachi interfered in Chinese politics ostensibly in support of the "legitimate" Ming successor, but took the power for himself.  The coins above were for circulation in Manchuria and are 15% heavier than those below issued in China.  That one is his propaganda piece declaring his loyalty to the old dynasty he was shortly to betray.  Can you name 73 other occasions in which the protector of the ancien regime actually overthrew it?
