ESSEQUIBO & DEMARARY,
Essequibo is the land around the river of the same name in what is now Guyana.  It was taken by the Dutch in 1616 when they were picking up Spanish colonies as part of their 250 year war against Spain.  Demarary is a variant spelling of Demarara, also a river.  It was also Dutch, mostly.  "Mostly" is because the French and English were mucking around in the region and the ownership rights were contested from time to time.  The British got a firm grip on both zones, and some more, early in the 19th century, when "British Guiana" was put together, lately to become independent Guyana.
