ROMAN COINS OF THE SEVERAN EMPERORS AND ASSOCIATES
In the 3rd century the Roman emperors, and therefore the Roman empire, either had problems or were problems.  In retrospect we tend to look at a century as a unitary entity of some kind, but, as we have just learned, the day after the century (or millennium) ends we get out of bed and brush our teeth just like we did the year before.  By the end of the 3rd century Rome was in trouble and everyone knew it.  Plans were made to fix things, but in the end they didn't work.

Actually, the coin is quite base, lets call it billon, and the combination of crummy metal, poor striking, and some meddling with the surface that one could charitably call "smoothing" make this only technically "fine."  But its still rare, still expensive, and we all know of coins much worse than this gratefully purchased for far more.
