LATE ROMAN COINS
The end game of ancient Rome was mostly a matter of the contraction of the economy toward the new center of gravity in Constantinople (now Istanbul).  Resources kept draining east and south, Rome mattered less and less, declined into a province, eventually a German soldier took over.  That's perhaps a little simpler than it should be, but it will do for now.  In the 5th century Rome became irrelevant.
