ROMAN IMPERATORII,
In the last half of the last century BC Rome fell completely into the hands of successive lots of big cheeses who fought amongst themselves to become top dog in what looked to them like an emerging monarchy of sorts.  The birth of the Roman Empire was thus something of a redo of the Book of Samuel in the Bible, where the people wanted a king, God advised against it, the people insisted, God told them "OK, but don't tell me I didn't warn you."
