RUSSIA, pre-unification "wire" money
Medieval Russian money grew out of the Mongol system, which, at its end point, encompassed small silver coins (dirhams), and small coppers (pul).  The dirham became the Russian denga.  After a while the denga shrank a bit and a double came into use.  That was the kopek.  The "wire" part is because the flans were prepared from pieces of wire beaten flat.  In the 1990s there were a lot of wire coins on the market but they are mostly gone now in the 21st century.
