TIBET,
Tell me why Tibet grabs and hold the attention of so many in the west.  Is it because of the supposed vast faith and compassion of the inhabitants in the face of the harshness of the environment?  Greg Mortensen (Three Cups of Tea) notes that conditions are identically lousy across the border in Pakistan but westerners somehow don't find themselves as stirred.  Historically Tibet was known as a land of demons and bandits before Padmasambhava brought Buddhism.  The inhabitants retained their tradition of brigandage for centuries after, creating problems for Nepal, India, and China and military interventions in response.  Extensive occupations by China from the 18th century on resulted in a formal vassal relationship, the origin of the current Chinese claim that Tibet is "part" of China.
