A COLLECTION OF ROMAN COINS

All unsold coins on this page have been moved to www.goldenruleenterprises.org

Links to later Roman coins are at bottom of this page.

There are about 380 in the collection, I'll be posting them as they're ready.  Today, June 5, 2019, I added about 20 more.  Please scroll down to see them.  New stuff starts with Clodius Albinus.  Next batch will go up in a few days, I think I'll start a second page.

Some comments on cleaning, grading, authenticity:

Cleaning: All ancient coins are cleaned, because they come out of the ground.  The only question is how good the cleaning job is.  If you are looking at a bright, shiny, smooth Roman silver coin you either like the surface or you don't.  If your bronze coin has a smooth surface that reflects light, even if it is technically uncirculated, you are probably looking at a thin coating of something applied after the coin was soaked in something else.

Grading: After years of thinking about it the grading companies came up with a scheme that attempts to describe grade as absolute wear (qualfied by the word "details"), and a number for striking characteristics given as x/y.

Given that my comments about cleaning are true, which they are, we can come to a position that accurate description of ancient coins would frequently get to 100 words, which no one would want to read or write.  So: pictures.  But pictures, by way of the flattening that they do, and the coarsening of gradients, and the freezing of shadows, and the static view, frequently do not show us things about the surface that we might like to know. Things like the bright, smooth surface of a denarius that got that way when someone took a lump of dirt and did things to it until it emerged into, say, the Nerva denarius below.  I graded the coin XF, noting of course the scratch on the cheek, but the bright and shiny, and more so the hints of rainbow toning here and there, are modern.  As a buyer one will decide what aesthetic qualities are acceptable.  If you demand your ancient coins be pristine, I assert that your ancient collection will contain no coins at all.

Authenticity: I have discovered that my judgement is fallible.  I have further discovered that no one is infallible.  The easiest way I've found for dealing with the uncertainty is to allow return of coins and banknotes if even suspected of being fake by the purchaser for as long as I maintain the business.  I used to allow returns as long as I am alive, but then the possibility occurred to me that I might end the coin business before I died, so the new policy will contain wordage relating to the future end of the business.  Anyway, as long as I'm in business you can return anything with only the statement that you think its fake, you'll get a full refund.

That said, all of the coins offered below seem to me, as of now, to be genuine.

Any questions, ask me.
